Cyclone Sitrang Wreaks havoc: 35 Die in Bangladesh


Cyclone Sitrang made a landfall over southern parts of Bangladesh near Barisal Tuesday night. The landfall process of the cyclone commenced at around 21:30 hours IST and continued until 23:30 IST. 

According to Skymet Weather, at the time of landfall the wind speed was 80 to 90 kmph gusting up to 100 kmph. At least 35 people were killed and several homes destroyed as cyclone Sitrang devastated Bangladesh's southern coastlines and central parts after it made a landfall overnight, according to officials and media reports.


1 crore people were without power in Bangladesh: Sitrang completed its landfall and weakened to a tropical depression over Bangladesh in the early hours of Tuesday. Around 1 crore people were without power in districts along the coasts on Tuesday.

No casualty in India: Fortunately, there has been no casualty in India. However, its impact in terms of moderate rains and strong winds was seen over southern parts of West Bengal places like Medinipur, 24 South Pargana and 24 North Parganas, according to Skymet Weather.

Cyclone degenerated into a depression: After making landfall the cyclone degenerated rapidly into a deep depression and subsequently into a depression moving in north easterly direction along Bangladesh. Now the system is marked as a well-marked low pressure over eastern parts of Assam and adjoining parts of Meghalaya.

The weather has improved significantly over Gangetic West Bengal and parts of South Bangladesh. Skymet Weather scientists do not expect any significant weather activities over these areas now. However, Northeast India may see moderate to heavy rains, particularly the eastern half of the region including Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura today. In fact, Arunachal Pradesh may also see some rains.
