Political Turmoil Over Rahul Gandhi's Comments On V D Savarkar

Pune: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's reported remarks on late Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar have led to political turmoil in the country with many BJP leaders condemning Gandhi.

The BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde group) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena have all slammed Rahul Gandhi’s comments wherein Rahul called Savarkar “a BJP agent.” Shiv Sena (Uddhav group) has also said it does not support Rahul’s comments.

BJP workers attack Cong office in Pune

Several workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) barged into the Congress's Pune city headquarters on Friday and attempted to blacken the photographs of party leader Rahul Gandhi to protest against his remarks on late Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar, police said.

People will give befitting reply to Rahul, says Fadnavis: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the people of Maharashtra will give a befitting reply to Rahul Gandhi's comment on freedom fighter Veer Savarkar.

Fadnavis said, “The people of Maharashtra will give a befitting reply to the shameless statement of Rahul Gandhi about Veer Savarkar. No one else has suffered as many atrocities as he did."

People will not tolerate insult to Savarkar, says Shinde: Hitting out at Rahul Gandhi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that the people of the state would not tolerate any insult to the Hindutva ideologue.

We do not support Rahul Gandhi's statement, says Uddhav: Shiv Sena (Uddhav group) leader Uddhav Thackeray has distanced himself from Rahul's statement.

He said, “We do not support Rahul Gandhi's statement on Veer Savarkar. We have respect and honor for Veer Savarkar in our hearts. No one can erase his contribution. I laugh when BJP and Sangh talk about Savarkar, they had no contribution in liberating India. They have no right to speak about Savarkar."

Police complaint filed: Savarkar’s grandson, Ranjit Savarkar, has filed a police complaint against Gandhi for making comments on Savarkar and has demanded his arrest.
