Patna: Along with the assembly election results of Gujarat and Himachal, the results of the by-elections for three seats in UP and Kurhani in Bihar also came on December 8. In Kurhani BJP's Kedar Prasad Gupta surprisingly won even against the grand alliance of five parties.
Meaning of Kurhani's result
The Kurhani assembly elections also became interesting because BJP was in the electoral fray on its own after 30 years. Earlier only JDU candidates used to try their luck on this seat. The JDU candidate had the unannounced support of five parties on Kurhani's seat, but had to face defeat.
Kurhani is not the traditional seat of anyone
It is too early to call the defeat of the grand alliance on the Kurhani assembly seat as a mandate against the alliance of Tejashwi Yadav and Nitish Kumar. By-elections had to be held here because sitting MLA Anil Sahani was disqualified in the fake travel allowance case. The public has never trusted a single party here.
In 2020, Anil Sahani defeated Kedar Prasad Gupta, who won this time, by just 712 votes. Before that in 2015, Kedar defeated Manoj Kushwaha by 11,000 votes.
Prohibition was also an issue
There is a sizeable number of Dalit votes in this seat. Prohibition was a big issue here. Male voters were angry because they have to face cases related to alcohol and on the other hand, women complain that even though alcohol is officially banned, the problem of illegal liquor remains. Women had protested even in Nitish's meeting here.
BJP is overjoyed with the victory. However, those who know Nitish say that he is an experienced and seasoned politician and this defeat will not prove to be a big setback for him.
