Coronavirus Updates: PM Modi Will Hold Crucial Review Meeting Today

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will review the situation related to Covid-19 in the country at a high-level meeting Thursday afternoon amid a surge in novel coronavirus cases globally.

A day earlier on Wednesday Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya reviewed the situation and urged people to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour, including wearing masks in crowded places, and getting vaccinated. He directed officials to be alert and reinforce surveillance.

Next week, the PM is expected to hold a meeting with chief ministers on Covid preparedness, including availability of oxygen cylinders, beds, medicines, etc.

Random sample testing will be done at airports

Official sources have said random sample testing will be done at airports for international passengers arriving from China and other countries. There has been a sudden spurt in Covid cases in China and some other countries.

India has been witnessing a steady decline in cases, with the average daily caseload falling to 158 in the week ended December 19. However, there has been a consistent rise in the global daily average caseload in the past six weeks, with 590,000 daily average cases reported in the week ended December 19.

Even as cases surge worldwide, experts have said that India need not worry or panic because BF.7 - a sublineage of Omicron variant BA.5 - was found in the country earlier and the four cases that have now come to light were detected in the past, with the patients since recovered.
