Today is Vijay Diwas: On This Day 93000 Pakistani Soldiers Laid Down Arms In Front Of India, A New Country Was Formed


New Delhi: Today, on December 16, in 1971, Pakistani Army Chief General Abdullah Niazi surrendered in front of Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Arora as a representative of the Indian Army. That too with 93 thousand soldiers. Arora was leading a joint force of Mukti Bahini Bangladesh and the Indian Army in this war. That is why Vijay Diwas or Victory Day is celebrated today.

Bangladesh came into existence only after this war. Prime Minister and Defense Minister and other dignitaries paid tribute to Indian soldiers.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid homage to all those brave armed forces personnel who ensured India attained an exceptional win in the 1971 war on the occasion of Vijay Diwas.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: "On Vijay Diwas, I pay homage to all those brave armed forces personnel who ensured India attained an exceptional win in the 1971 war. Our nation will always be indebted to the armed forces for their role in keeping the country safe and secure."

President Draupadi Murmu and PM Modi also participated in the 'At Home' function organized at the Army House in the national capital on the eve of 'Victory Day' on Thursday.

Rajnath Singh laid a wreath at National War Memorial 

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh laid a wreath at the National War Memorial on the occasion of Vijay Diwas. 

Earlier, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan, Army chief General Manoj Pande, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and Vice Chief of Indian Navy Vice Admiral SN Ghormade also laid wreaths at the National War Memorial.
