G-20: Introduction

The G-20 or Group of Twenty is an intergovernmental forum consisting of 19 countries and the European Union. The group works to address key issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

G-20 members represent about 85 percent of global GDP, more than 75 percent of global trade, and nearly two-thirds of the world population.

Objectives of G-20

The main objectives of G-20 are as follows; i) policy co-ordination among its members to achieve global economic stability, sustainable development; (ii) promoting financial regulations that reduce risks and prevent future financial crises; and (iii) modernisation of the international financial structure.

New Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction will be set up

A new Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction will be set-up by the G-20 under the chairmanship of India to encourage collective work, conduct multi-disciplinary research and exchange best practices on disaster risk reduction.

The Group of Twenty (G-20) is the main forum for international economic co-operation. It plays an important role in shaping and strengthening the global architecture and governance on all major global economic issues.

Importance of chairing G-20 for India

India will chair the G-20 from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023. On December 1, 2022, India assumed the G-20 chairmanship from Indonesia and will host the first ever G-20 leaders’ summit in the country in 2023.

India’s G-20 chairmanship is historic in the country’s history, as it seeks to play an important role by finding practical global solutions for the good of all and, in doing so, it projects the true spirit of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’' or ‘The world is one family’

T20 - Introduction
