Dhanbad: Six people were burnt alive when a fire broke out in a private hospital in Jharkhand's Dhanbad late on intervening night of Friday and Saturday.
The deceased included the doctor couple, their maid, and the doctor's nephew. They died of suffocation. Two guests of doctor couple also died. All the bodies have been recovered from different rooms.
Dr. Hazra's two pet dogs also died of suffocation. Dr. Vikas Hazra was the son of Dr. CC Hazra, the founder of the hospital, and Dr. Prema Hazra was his daughter-in-law.
Patients evacuated safely
All the patients have been evacuated from the hospital safely.
The hospital and Dr. Hajra's residence are in the same premises. It is suspected that the fire broke out due to the short circuit. Everyone inside the house was asleep. The hospital personnel informed the Bankmod police station and the fire brigade at around 2.30 am.
The name of the hospital is Hazra Clinic and Hospital and it is situated on Telephone Exchange Road in Bank Mod police station area of Dhanbad. Dr Vikas Hazra, his wife Prema Hazra along with the family lived on the first floor of the clinic.
A video of the tragedy has also surfaced . Doctor Hazra is pleading to save himself from the window. The firemen and people below are telling him that don't worry, doctor... we are coming... we are coming to you by the ladder.
Dr. Vikas Hazra died on way to hospital
Somehow the fire team members reached inside Dr. Hazra's house. Till that time Dr. Vikas Hazra was breathing. He was evacuated from there and given first aid at Hazra Hospital.
After this he was taken to SNMMCH. However, he died on the way. Fireman Manish Kumar also got burnt while extinguishing the fire.
DSP Law and Order Arvind Kumar Binha, Bankmod SHO PK Singh along with the entire team of Bankmod Police Station is engaged in rescue work on the spot.
CM expresses grief
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has expressed grief over the accident. He wrote on his Twitter that the news of the death of a total of 6 people, including the famous doctor couple Dr. Vikas and Dr. Prema Hazra, in the late night fire at Hazra Memorial Hospital in Dhanbad, is distressing. May God grant peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved family members to bear this grief.
