Joshimath Sinking: Families To Be Immediately Shifted From Danger Zone; Cenre Forms Panel

Joshimath (Uttarakhand): The Joshimath, Chamoli district administration has asked NTPC and Hindustan Construction Company to build 2,000 pre-fabricated buildings to house the Joshimath families.

State govt will pay the rent of houses for 6 months

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami will visit Joshimath on Saturday. Dhami, in a high-level meeting on Friday, ordered immediate evacuation of the danger zone and construction of a large rehabilitation center at a safer place for the affected families. At the same time, instructions were given to shift 600 families living in dangerous houses immediately.

The government has asked families whose houses are unlivable or have been damaged to move to rented accommodation. The government will give them 4 thousand rupees every month as rent. This amount will be provided from the CM Relief Fund for the next 6 months.

Centre forms panel

The Central Government has constituted a committee to "expeditiously study" the Joshimath Land Sinking incident in Uttarakhand and its impact.

The Ministry of Jal Shakti said that representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Central Water Commission, the Geological Survey of India and the Mission for Clean Ganga would be included in the committee.

Accordingly, this committee will study the incident expeditiously and find out its causes and effects. The committee will submit its report within three days.

These steps are being taken because the danger of Joshimath city is sinking and has become highly unsafe for the residents.

Cracks are getting bigger every hour

The cracks in the walls and buildings of many houses of Joshimath city are continuously getting thicker and this has been going on for the last few days.

Cracks have also started appearing on the roads here. President of Joshimath Municipal Corporation, Shailendra Panwar told that 'the situation has now become worrisome as these cracks are getting bigger every hour'.

Keeping in view the deteriorating situation, work has been stopped at Tapovan and Vishnugarh Hydropower Projects of NTPC in Joshimath city.

Along with this, the work of Helang bypass road has also been stopped. The operation of Asia's longest ropeway 'Auli Ropeway' has also been stopped.

People say their warnings in the past were ignored

People protesting against the government in Joshimath allege that the government did not pay heed to their warnings about NTPC's hasty constructions in the past.

Atul Sati, convenor of Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, has asked, 'Why has the government stopped the construction work now when we are on the verge of collapsing in the ground. Why didn't they pay attention to us earlier.

Tunnel has made the land hollow

Atul Sati has claimed that the tunnel built under the Tapovan Vishnugarh project has hollowed out the land.

The concerns of the local people increased further when they saw mud coming out from the land of Marwari Ward and Ward 2 of Joshimath. People suspect that this mud is seeping from the tunnel being built on the mountain.

Concerns were raised in 2013 about tunnels

Geologist SP Sati, who has studied this area, says that in the year 2013, concerns were raised that the tunnels related to the hydropower project could bring destruction in Uttarakhand.

Joshimath municipality has found in its survey conducted in last December that 2882 people can be affected by this type of disaster. Municipality President Shailendra Panwar told that so far 550 houses have been found unsafe, out of which 150 houses are such that they can collapse anytime.

Can Joshimath be still saved?

A team of experts, including officials from the administration and State Disaster Management, conducted a door-to-door survey in the areas which were affected by the land subsidence in Uttarakhand Joshimath.
Garhwal Commissioner Sushil Kumar and Disaster Management Secretary Ranjit Kumar Sinha started the door-to-door survey in the Joshimath, Chamoli district. But many people feel it is now too late to save Joshimath.
