Uttarakhand: Joshimath Vulnerable As New Cracks Appear In Houses, Families Migrating, Angry People Protest


Joshimath (Uttarakhand): Land and mountains are sinking in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Its effect is also visible in Joshimath town. Here 561 houses have developed cracks. So far 66 families have migrated.

Cracks are also increasing on all the main roads of Sunil Ward due to which people are facing a lot of difficulty in walking.

After the land sinking, it has been decided to close Asia's longest ropeway in Joshimath.

Photos and videos from the site showed the town at its most vulnerable state as many people are set to lose their homes they constructed with their hard earned money. 

A state of helplessness and uncertainty has crept in for many residents in the Joshimath town as they stare at a major loss while fearing for their lives. 

Many families have shifted out of their homes to other safe locations while many still live in their cracked homes risking their lives amid freezing cold conditions.

CM Dhami will visit area to take stock of situation

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami will visit the area soon to take stock of the situation. He told that a team of experts will go to Joshimath today to investigate this. Dhami has given instructions to take necessary steps for the relief and rescue of the people.

Case is also being monitored by the PMO

The Joshimath land sinking case is also being monitored by the PMO (Prime Minister's Office). A team will reach today to take stock of the situation in the area.

A 5-member team of geologists, engineers and officers has already investigated the cracks. If sources are to be believed, this panel found that many parts of Joshimath are submerging due to man-made and natural reasons.

People protest, ask govt to take action

Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has announced to close the market today. People are angry with the working style of the government and are questioning the works of the administration.

People protested by taking out a torch procession on Wednesday. The protesters said that water is now seeping from under the ground. Water is coming out from the ground at a number of places. Cracks are appearing in the houses, but the government is not doing anything. The protesters have demanded the government to take important steps to stop it.
