Weather News: Icy cold winds sweep across Northwest India; Rajasthan Freezes With Biting Cold

Jaipur/New Delhi: Icy cold winds from snow clad mountains of Western Himalayas are sweeping across Northwest, Central and Eastern parts of India leading to significant dip in temperatures. 

According to Skymet, arid region of Rajasthan and parts of Haryana are witnessing harshest and biting cold. 

Many districts of Rajasthan have been recording zero and sub zero minimums. Churu recorded minus 2.5, Sikar - 2, Alwar and Bhilwara zero degree. Hisar in Haryana is also at 0.8 degree.

Ground frost harmful for crops

There are reports from many parts of Rajasthan about subzero temperatures. Ground frost is being witnessed over many parts of Rajasthan, which is very harmful for standing crops. 

The cold winds will continue for another 24 to 48 hours and temperatures will not have much deviation. However, western districts of Rajasthan may witness marginal increase in temperatures from January 18.

Relief expected around Jan 19

A fresh Western disturbance is approaching Western Himalayas by night of January 18. Relief from biting cold is expected around January 19. And there after temperatures will keep on increasing and may reach in double digit by January 22nd or 23rd.

Cold wave persists in Delhi

Cold wave conditions continued in Delhi with the minimum temperature at the Safdarjung observatory recorded at 2.4 degrees Celsius.

15 trains delayed

At least 15 trains were delayed by one hour to eight hours due to foggy weather, a spokesperson of the Northern Railways said. 

The Palam observatory, near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, recorded a visibility level of 500 metres.
