AAP's Shelly Oberoi Elected Delhi Mayor

New Delhi: Delhi has got a new mayor 80 days after the municipal elections. Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party was elected mayor.

39-year-old Shelly Oberoi received 150 votes while Rekha Gupta 116 out of the total 266 polled in the election held after a decisive victory for AAP in the Supreme Court.

Delhi has got a woman mayor after 10 years. BJP's Rajni Abbi was the last woman mayor in 2011. After this, in 2012, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was divided into 3 parts in the Sheila Dixit government. In 2022, these parts were united again. After that this was the first election.

Kejriwal, Sisodia greet

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia congratulated Oberoi and the party workers. "The goons have lost, the public won. Today in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the people of Delhi won and hooliganism was defeated," Mr Kejriwal said.

Since the civic elections in December, which the AAP won, the mayoral elections were deferred thrice amid a prolonged tussle between the AAP and the BJP.

Oberoi is a former visiting assistant professor at Delhi University and a first-time councillor. She contested the elections from former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta’s home turf of East Patel Nagar and defeated the candidate from there, Deepali Kumar, by 269 votes. BJP has had a stronghold in the area so far.
