Madhya Pradesh: Digvijaya Singh's Supporter Leaders Sidelined; Resentment Against Kamal Nath; Will This Hit Congress’s Poll Campaign

Bhopal: About 8 months are now left for the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh. While on one hand BJP is trying to make door-to-door contact by taking out Vikas Yatras, on the other hand Congress is getting entangled in factionalism. This is affecting the party’s election campaign.

At least three prominent Congress leaders in MP viz. Arun Yadav, Jitu Patwari and Ajay Singh are not happy due to the stature of Kamal Nath in the party. They are considered close to Digvijaya Singh but feel they are being marginalized in the party. As Nath  holds great influence in the state, these leaders fear party high command would consult Nath during ticket distribution.

Arun Yadav said Cong does not project a leader as CM candidate

Recently, former Congress President Arun Yadav had raised eyebrows by saying that Kamal Nath is the state president, he has not been declared as the chief ministerial candidate. Congress does not have the tradition of contesting elections by declaring its chief ministerial candidate. The decision on the chief minister's post in the party is taken after the elections, Yadav had said.

Ajay Singh also made a similar statement

There has never been any objection or difference of opinion on leadership of Kamal Nath in the Congress, but suddenly Arun Yadav's statement created a political ruckus. After Arun Yadav, former Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh also made a similar statement. He also said that the Chief Minister is not announced beforehand in the Congress.

Patwari recently said he is still executive president

Factionalism in Congress is also evident in Jitu Patwari's statement. Jitu Patwari recently said that he is still the executive president of MP Congress. While State Congress President Kamal Nath has abolished the system of executive president in PCC reorganization and has appointed all four Executive Presidents as State Vice Presidents.

Jitu Patwari challenged Kamal Nath's decision by saying that he was appointed by the high command, so he would hold the post of executive president for 5 years.

But Nath’s supporters are projecting him as future CM

However, Kamal Nath's supporters are projecting him as the future CM by putting up posters at various places. On several occasions Kamal Nath himself warned the government officers not to show favoritism towards BJP and said that Congress would be returning to power soon. It means Kamal Nath has in a way declared himself as CM in waiting.

Nath was the chief minister for 15 months under the Congress rule. He has also held the post of Leader of Opposition and State Congress President for a long time. In such a situation, the common worker is seeing him as the future Chief Minister from the Congress side.

Nath remained absent during Monsoon session

The Congress's differences came to the fore even during the monsoon session of the Vidhan Sabha, when Kamal Nath remained absent from the House for the entire duration of the debate on Dr. Govind Singh's no-confidence motion.

Yadav, Ajay Singh and Jitu are considered supporters of Digvijaya

Arun Yadav, Ajay Singh and Jitu Patwari, all the three leaders are considered staunch supporters of Digvijaya Singh. From the ongoing rhetoric in the Congress, it appears that there is an internal struggle going on between the supporters of Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath which sometimes comes to the surface. Whatever may be the reason, it is definitely affecting the election campaign of Congress.

Digvijaya Singh supporters resent Nath’s influence

Kamal Nath is such a senior and experienced leader that the high command is not in a position to interfere in his decisions. Perhaps the supporters of Digvijaya Singh don’t like Kamal Nath's omnipotence in the state Congress. It is also possible that such statements are being made to create pressure in ticket distribution.

Nath will have say in ticket distribution

In fact, the supporters of Digvijaya Singh are restless due to the status of Kamal Nath in the state Congress. They feel that Kamal Nath's opinion will prevail in ticket distribution. In order to create pressure, Digvijaya Singh's supporters are making statements. Arun Yadav was angry with Kamal Nath because of the developments in the Khandwa Lok Sabha by-poll.
After this by-election, efforts were made to normalize relations between the two, but Arun Yadav was again marginalized by Kamal Nath when Surendra Singh Shera was give responsibility to welcome Rahul Gandhi's Yatra in MP and this responsibility was snatched from Arun Yadav.

Jitu removed from important posts

Jitu Patwari is not happy with Kamal Nath because first he was removed from the post of media in-charge and secondly he was removed from the post of executive president of State Congress and included among 55 vice-presidents. Apart from this, during a session of the Legislative Assembly, he had announced the boycott of the Governor's address, on which Kamal Nath immediately reprimanded him showing displeasure.
