Maharashtra: Blow To Uddhav Thackeray, EC Allots Name 'Shiv Sena' And Poll Symbol To Group Led By CM Eknath Shinde

Mumbai: In a big blow to Uddhav Thackeray, the Election Commission on Friday allotted the name 'Shiv Sena' and its poll symbol 'bow and arrow' to the group led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The commission found that the current constitution of the Shiv Sena Uddhav faction is undemocratic. The Uddhav faction spoiled it by undemocratically appointing people from their circle as office bearers without holding elections.

Undemocratic practices were secretly brought back

The Election Commission also found that undemocratic practices were secretly brought back in the Shiv Sena Uddhav's original constitution, reducing the party to a private fiefdom. These methods were rejected by the Election Commission in 1999. Such a party structure fails to inspire confidence. With this, the claim of Uddhav faction Maharashtra is considered to be over.

In a unanimous order on the six-month-old petition filed by Shinde, the three-member commission allowed the Thackeray faction to retain the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the 'flaming torch' poll symbol, given to it in an interim order last year, till the conclusion of ongoing assembly bypolls in the state.

Shinde said – this is the victory of democracy

On the decision of the Election Commission, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said – This is the victory of the ideologies of Balasaheb and Anand Dighe along with our workers, MPs, MLAs, people's representatives and lakhs of Shiv Sainiks. This is the victory of democracy.

He said- This country runs on the constitution prepared by Babasaheb Ambedkar. We formed our government on the basis of that constitution. The order of the Election Commission that has come today is on the basis of merit. I express my gratitude to the Election Commission.
