Atiq Ahmed Among 3 Sentenced To Life Imprisonment In Umesh Pal Kidnapping Case

Prayagraj: In the case of kidnapping of Umesh Pal, witness of the Raju Pal murder case in Prayagraj, the special court of MP-MLA here on Tuesday sentenced three accused, including mafia Atiq Ahmed, to life imprisonment.

In this case, seven including Atiq's brother Ashraf were acquitted due to lack of evidence. Government advocate Gulab Chandra Agrahari said that the court of special judge Dinesh Chandra Shukla convicted Atiq Ahmed, Dinesh Pasi and advocate Khan Soulat Hanif under sections 364A and 120B in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced all three to life imprisonment. Seven other accused in the case were acquitted for lack of evidence.

Eleven people were accused in this case, out of which one has died.

Atiq's brother among 7 acquitted

Seven others including Atiq's brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf have been acquitted in the case, he said.

Atiq, Khan Soulat and Dinesh Pasi have been convicted. The names of those acquitted are Ashraf alias Khalid Azim, Farhan, Javed alias Bajju, Abid, Israr, Ashiq alias Malli, Ejaz Akhtar. 

After the killing of the then BSP MLA Raju Pal on January 25, 2005, Umesh Pal, then a zila panchayat member, had told police he was a witness to the murder.

Umesh Pal had alleged that when he refused to retract and buckle under pressure from Ahmed, he was kidnapped at gunpoint on February 28, 2006.

The FIR was registered on July 5, 2007, against Ahmed, his brother and others. The police had submitted a chargesheet in the matter against 11 people. One of them later died.

When Atiq was taken to the court, lawyers in the premises raised slogans of 'Phansi Do Phansi'. Earlier, Atiq was brought to the court in a closed van from Naini Central Jail. It had CCTV cameras and curtains. The distance of 10 km till the court was covered in 28 minutes.

Atiq was brought to Prayagraj from Ahmedabad's Sabarmati Jail and his brother Ashraf from Bareilly Jail on Monday evening. Both were kept in the high security barracks in Naini Central Jail.
