German Church Shooting: At Least 7 Die, Many Injured; Gunman Believed To Be Among Dead

Hamburg (Germany): At least seven people were killed in a shooting at a Jehovah's Witness centre late Thursday night in Hamburg, Germany's second largest city. According to the police, the assailant continued firing for about 10 minutes.

The police are yet to confirm the death toll. Many people are believed injured and the death toll could rise further. The gunman is believed to be among the dead.

An officer said – We have not received the news of anyone absconding. We reached the spot within 15 minutes of getting information about the firing. We heard gunshots on the top floor of the church. On reaching there, a dead body was found. We think it belongs to the attacker. At present it has not been identified.

No reliable information on the motive of the crime

Police said at the moment there is no reliable information on the motive of the crime. Police have urged people not to speculate.

Police said that CCTVs are being scanned. The roads around the building have been cordoned off and heavy police force is deployed at the spot. 

According to the police, many people have been hit by bullets. A police spokesman said – Deceased had bullet wounds on their bodies. Two eyewitnesses said they heard gunshots.

Alarm for extreme danger sounded

The alarm for "extreme danger" in the area had been sounded and police urged residents to stay indoors.

Hamburg mayor, Peter Tschentscher, expressed shock at the shooting on Twitter. Consoling the victims' families, he said emergency services were doing their best to clarify the situation.

Police said an event had been taking place on Thursday evening in the 3-storey building and Jehovah's Witnesses had gathered for a weekly Bible study meeting.
