Maharashtra: 2 Groups Clash In Aurangabad On Eve Of Ram Navami; Several Hurt; Vehicles Torched

Aurangabad: Tension gripped Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) when two groups of youths clashed on the occasion of Ram Navami in Kiradpura here following which a riot broke out.

About half dozen people, including two policemen, were injured in the attack. The violence started before midnight and continued for nearly four hours.  The unruly mob also attacked the police and pelted stones at the police vehicles. 

Police officials reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Tear gas shells were fired to disperse the crowd. 

Three fire brigade vehicles also reached the spot to extinguish the fire of the vehicles that were torched. More police personnel were deployed in the area and security was beefed up to prevent untoward incidents.

Programmes were organized in many areas of the city on the occasion of Ram Navami to be celebrated today i.e. on Thursday. 

Preparations were also going on at the Ram Mandir located in Kiradpura Basti. About 11.30 pm, a group of youths were going towards the temple. They had an argument with another group and soon the things escalated Abusing started in both the groups and it turned into sloganeering.

Stones pelted after argument

After a while a group pelted stones towards the temple. Some people entered the temple to save their lives but they were also attacked. 

People called the police but the rioters also threw stones at the police vehicles and set them ablaze.

Religious leaders called

Some religious leaders were called to control the crowd. But the crowd was not ready to listen to them either. Within no time, a heavy force including senior police officers reached the spot. 

The rioters also pelted stones at them and broke the glasses of the cars. The police dispersed the crowd by lathi charge. Police burst tear gas shells too. The rioters also threw water on the fire brigade vehicles.
