Saweety Boora's Mother Observed Navratra Fast For Her Victory; Will Offer Her Choorma On Coming Home

Hisar: Celebrations were held at the house of Boxer Saweety Boora in Hisar when she won the gold medal in the World Women's Boxing Championship on Saturday, .

Saweety's mother Suresh Kumari said on Sunday that when Saweety's final match was going on, she was engaged in worship the whole time. She said that when Saweety comes, she will offer her churma. Suresh Kumari told that for the victory of her daughter, she had observed fast on Navratras.

Saweety Boora secured a gold medal in the 75-81 kg finals against China's Wang Lina at the IBA World Women's Boxing Championship in New Delhi on Saturday. The light heavyweight boxer produced a superb show against her Chinese opponent and was declared winner by points (4-3) as India won both the finals scheduled for the day.

'She fulfilled her promise'

Sweety's father Mahendra Singh Boora told that before leaving, Saweety had said, "Papa I will bring gold." And after winning the match she called and told that she had fulfilled her promise.

Family members told that Saweety had fever on Saturday, the day of the match, but she played and won. They said that Saweety is still not well but her return is not confirmed as of now as her games are still going on.

The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated Boxer Saweety Boora for winning the Gold Medal in Women's Boxing World Championships.

The Prime Minister tweeted; "Exceptional performance by @saweetyboora! Proud of her for winning the Gold Medal in Women's Boxing World Championships. Her success will inspire many upcoming athletes."

Boora was born on 10 January 1993 in rural Hisar, Haryana. Her father Mahender Singh, a farmer, played basketball at the national level. Boora was a state-level kabaddi player before switching to boxing in 2009 at the insistence of her father. She initially trained in the farmlands near Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University and had to move out of Haryana in order to pursue a career in the sport.
