AAP's Shelly Oberoi Re-elected Delhi Mayor

New Delhi: Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party was on Thursday re-elected as the Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Voting for this post was to be held today on Wednesday, but before the voting, the BJP withdrew the names of its candidate Shikha Rai and the candidate for the post of Deputy Mayor.

Shelly Oberoi became the Mayor in the elections held on 22 February. Then her tenure was for only 38 days, which is now ending. For this reason, the mayoral elections were being held again, as the term of the Delhi MCD begins from April 1 and ends on March 31 next year.

Shelly Oberoi was elected as the Delhi mayor on February 22. She had defeated BJP's Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes. Shelly Oberoi polled 150 votes, while Rekha Gupta received 116 of the total 266 votes polled.

The post of mayor in Delhil sees five single-year terms on a rotational basis, with the first year reserved for women, the second for the open category, the third for the reserved category and the remaining two again for the open category. The city gets a new mayor after the end of a financial year.
