Rahul To File Plea Today Against Surat Court Order, Priyanka, Gehlot, Other Senior Leaders To Accompany Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will file a plea today i.e. on Monday against his two-year sentence by a court in Surat in defamation case. Gandhi will land in Surat at around 2 pm, as per the Congress sources.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, chief ministers of three Congress-ruled states, other national and state party leaders are expected to be with Rahul, sources said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Congress Rajya Sabha member K C Venugopal and other senior party leaders are likely to accompany Rahul to the court.

Matter is likely to be taken up for hearing today itself

In his petition, Rahul will request the sessions court in Surat to quash the magistrate court order convicting him in the defamation case. He will also seek an interim stay on the conviction till the matter is disposed of.

Rahul was disqualified from the Parliament after the court sentenced him to two years in prison over the defamation case.

Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Verma had convicted Gandhi in a 2019 defamation case, for saying ‘why do all thieves have the name Modi’, and sentenced him to two years in prison.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha, a day after he was convicted in a defamation case by a Surat court. A notice issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat said he stood disqualified from the House from March 23, the day of his conviction. Rahul Gandhi has to now move a higher court and get his conviction stayed.

Another defamation complaint has also been filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Haridwar Court over his alleged comment during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in January this year where he referred to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as the ‘Kauravas of twenty-first century'.

This new case was filed by Advocate Arun Bhadauria on the complaint of RSS worker, Kamal Bhadauria.
