Satwik Sai Raj Rankireddy And Chirag Shetty Script History; Win Badminton Asia Championships

 


DUBAI: Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty scripted history on Sunday, April 30 by becoming the first doubles pair to win a Gold medal at the Badminton Asia Championships. 

 

Last year, the pair won the Thomas Cup, Commonwealth Games and World Championship medals for the country. The pair has achieved another feat.

An Indian pair has become the champion for the first time in the 61-year history of the championship. Not only this, this pair has given India the second gold of the championship after 1965. Earlier, Dinesh Khanna had won the country its first gold in the men's singles category.

Chirag and Satwik defeated the Malaysian pair of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Yeo Yee 16-21, 21-17, 21-19 in the final match played in Dubai on Sunday. The match lasted one hour and seven minutes.

Badminton Association of India President Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a reward of Rs 20 lakh on this achievement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Satwik SaiRaj Rankireddy  and Chirag Shetty for becoming the first Indian Men's Doubles pair to win the Badminton Asia Championships Title.

 

The Prime Minister tweeted : "Proud of @satwiksairaj and @Shettychirag04 for scripting history by becoming the first Indian Men's Doubles pair to win the Badminton Asia Championships Title. Congratulations to them and wishing them the very best for their future endeavours."
