Massive Avalanche Hits Sikkim Capital Gangtok’s Nathula Area, 6 Tourists Die


GANGTOK: Massive avalanche hit Nathula area in Sikkim's capital Gangtok on Tuesday. Six tourists died, while 11 others were injured. The injured are being brought to the state capital Gangtok's hospital.


The deceased include four men, a woman and a child. The incident took place at after 12 noon on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg connecting Gangtok to Nathu La Pass. Officials said rescue and clearance operations were on.


25-30 tourists were trapped

The avalanche had trapped 25-30 tourists, according to defense sources.


"Swift rescue operations were launched by Border Roads Organization and 22 people were rescued till now including 6 from a deep valley," they said.


Some 350 people and 80 vehicles, which were stranded on the road because of the snow blocking the road from Nathu La, were also brought back, officials said.


Mishap occurred on 14th Milestone

A pass is issued to tourists for up to 13th Milestone in the area. There is no permission to go ahead of it. It is being told that the tourists went up to the 14th Milestone on Jawaharlal Nehru Marg and the accident happened here. 


The Border Roads Organization immediately started the rescue operation. 22 people have been rescued. Of these, 6 were pulled out of a deep gorge.


Nathula Pass is situated on the border with China and is a major tourist destination because of its scenic beauty.
