Thane Bhiwandi Building Collapse: 31 Die, Many Still Trapped In Debris


Thane (Maharashtra): Three people died and 10 people were rescued from the debris after a multi-storey building collapsed in Thane's Bhiwandi area on Saturday afternoon.


Many people are still trapped. Police are present on the spot along with the fire brigade and disaster management team.


Avinash Sawant, head of the regional disaster management cell, said several people were feared trapped under the debris. The ground plus two-storey building in Wardhaman compound collapsed at around 1.45 pm on Saturday, he said. 


A family of four lived on the upper floor, while laborers worked on the ground floor. He said fire tenders from Bhiwandi, Thane and other nearby areas have been deployed for the search and rescue operation.


The cause of the building collapse in Bhiwandi has not been ascertained yet.  One of the deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Navnath Sawant. 


Fire engines from Bhiwandi, Thane and other surrounding areas have been deployed for search and rescue operations. 


Avinash Sawant, the chief of the regional disaster management cell, said rescue and relief operations were initiated at the site in Valpada area of Mankoli as several people are feared trapped in the debris.
