NCP Panel Likely To Pick Sharad Pawar's Successor Today; Will Supriya Sule Be Named Party President

MUMBAI: A decision on who will lead the Nationalist Congress Party next after 82-year-old Sharad Pawar's resignation could be taken at a meeting of the committee of the NCP to be held from 11 am today on Friday.

The committee was set up by Sharad Pawar to choose his successor. It includes Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, former Union leader Parful Patel and Bhujbal.

On condition of anonymity NCP leaders said Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule was expected to be named the party's national president while Ajit Pawar will take head the Maharashtra unit.

These leaders said Ajit Pawar had recently expressed his chief ministerial ambitions, while Sule has always said national politics interests her.

They said Supriya had established herself as an effective parliamentarian and has contacts with leaders of parties across the political spectrum. On the other hand, Ajit Pawar has a good command over the state unit and is widely hailed as an able administrator.

Bhujbal has also endorsed Supriya Sule as party chief

Senior party leader Chaggan Bhujbal has also endorsed Supriya Sule as Sharad Pawar's successor.  He said Ajit Pawar should take care of the state and Supriya should take care of national politics. She should be the next national president if Sharad Pawar doesn't want to continue as the president, he had said a day earlier.
