Bhopal: If all goes well Bhopal's Van Vihar National Park will lure the visitors with lion and tiger cubs in the near future. The park management has proposed to breed the tiger and lion and it is for the first time in the country that the captive breeding of lions is planned in a national park.
Asiatic lion is found only in Gujarat’s Gir national park. Therefore breeding of lions is very significant. A pair of lions has been released in the new enclosure of the Van Vihar’s breeding center. The decision of breeding the lions has been taken by the director of Van Vihar, Padma Priya Balakrishnan. Full care is being taken in their breeding.
The decision to start breeding of lions was taken after the breeding project was approved by the Government of India. The Government of India has included Van Vihar as well as Mukundpur Safari and Zoo as the breeding centre.
As a precautionary measure, the history of grandparents of the lion pair was checked to ensure the inbreeding does not occur.
Big cats are not confined to Van Vihar in Bhopal
Meanwhile, big cats are not confined to Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal. The sprawling tiger landscape of Bhopal may not have been a designated national park or a sanctuary but the woody city surroundings have been buzzing with wildlife activities.
A large contiguous forest area spread over about 150 sq square kms in the jungles around two famous dams- Kolar and Kerwa- is now home of at least 10 adult felines. They are resident tigers of Bhopal- born and brought up in the city jungle and termed as the urban tigers. In fact the tiger landscape is spread beyond these two dams over a vast swathe of forest.
