New Delhi: The first sleeper version of Vande Bharat Express based on completely indigenous technology and design will arrive before June 2025. It will be based on European standards of safety and security.
An agreement for the manufacture of 80 sets of sleeper class Vande Bharat trains was signed between the joint consortium of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) and Railway Board.
Railway Board Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti and Member (Traction and Rolling Stock) Naveen Gulati were present on the occasion.
TRSL Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Umesh Chowdhary later told that the sleeper version of Vande Bharat will be completely indigenous. The base design of this train set will be prepared by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of the Railways located in Chennai. Thus it will be a Public Private Partnership project.
80 train sets will be manufactured
Chaudhary said that according to this agreement, the joint consortium of BHEL-TRSL will manufacture 80 train sets as well as maintain them for 35 years. For this, two maintenance depots will probably be set up in the country at Chennai and Mumbai.
Each train set to cost Rs 120 crore
When asked about the agreement and the manufacturing cost of the train set, he clarified that the cost per train set would be Rs 120 crore. The cost of making 80 train sets will be Rs 9600 crore. The cost of maintenance for 35 years will be Rs 14 thousand 400 crore.
