Manipur Women's Video: PM Modi Said This; Supreme Court, NCW Also Take Cognizance Of Incident

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while expressing deep anguish over the incident in Manipur, took a strong stand on the incident amidst the opposition's questions today and said that whatever is happening in Manipur is shameful for the civilized society, that is why those responsible for these incidents will not be forgiven.

Tension mounted in the hills of Manipur after a May 4 video surfaced on Wednesday showing two women from one of the warring communities being paraded naked by a group of men from the other side.

Addressing reporters on Thursdsay just before the commencement of the Monsoon Session in the Parliament House Complex, Modi said, "I am standing in the temple of democracy and the incident that has come to light in Manipur is shameful for any civilized society. Because of this incident 140 crore people of the country have to be ashamed. Those responsible for this incident will not be spared."

Appealing to the state governments to stop such incidents and take strict stand on crimes against women especially, he said, “I request all the Chief Ministers to strengthen law and order in their states and take strict steps especially to protect women. Women should be respected by rising above politics.”

Simply unacceptable: SC

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Thursday took suo moto cognizance of the incident and said it is "deeply disturbed" by the video.

Terming it "simply unacceptable", a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud directed the Center and the state government to take immediate steps and apprise the apex court on what action has been taken.

"We will give a little time to the government to act otherwise we will take action if nothing is happening on the ground," the bench, also comprising Justices P S Narasimha and Manoj Misra, said.

NCW Asks State Police Chief To Take Prompt Action

The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of an alleged incident of women being paraded naked in Manipur and asked the state police chief to take prompt action in the matter.

"NCW condemns the Manipur incident. Taking suo motu cognizance, the DGP Manipur has been asked to promptly take appropriate action," the NCW tweeted.
