New Delhi: Meta has rolled out a new social media platform that looks like it could give tough competition to Twitter. Well, we are talking about Threads. The social media platform looks like an extension of the popular Instagram photo and video-sharing features to build a welcoming and imaginative community where people can share their thoughts.
Some users are also naming it 'Twitter Killer'
Mark Zuckerberg, owner of social media firm Meta, launched new micro-blogging site Threads on Wednesday night. It is being considered as a competitor of Twitter. Some users are also naming it 'Twitter Killer'. Twitter has more than 100 crore users worldwide.
While Twitter revolutionised real-time updates and concise communication, Threads aims to create a more intimate messaging experience, allowing users to share personal moments exclusively with close friends.
Not launched in EU
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that two million (20 lakh) people joined Threads in just two hours. After four hours, its number increased to cross 50 lakhs. It has just been launched in 100 countries. It has not been launched in the European Union due to regulatory concerns.
Like Twitter, it is also a text-based platform. You can publish threads posts up to 500 characters long on this. Links, photos and videos can also be shared on this. Videos can be up to 5 minutes long. It has been launched on Wednesday night around 11.30 pm.
Threads’ strength may lie in its connections to Instagram
Its strength may lie in its connections to Instagram, which will likely help it attract users rapidly. Well, Mark Zuckerberg also wrote in a thread earlier today, "Just passed 5 million sign-ups in the first four hours..."
Threads saw 1 crore sign ups within just seven hours of launch today, according to some media reports.
Opinions are sharply divided on whether Threads will outperform Twitter. Some say its links to Instagram, which provides it with a ready user base, will be an advantage, especially at a time when Elon Musk and new Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino try to revive the struggling business.
Twitter has a news-oriented outlook
Others, however, feel that Twitter has a news-oriented outlook that Instagram, primarily a visual platform, will find difficult to replace.
The primary characteristic that distinguishes Threads from Twitter is that it aspires to be decentralized. You should thus be able to integrate your Threads postings into other social networking networks in the future.
