17 Die, Many Missing In Mizoram Bridge Collapse




Aizwal: At least 17 workers were killed on Wednesday after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed near Sairang area of Mizoram  about 21 km from Aizawl, police said.


Several others are still feared trapped at the site, as 35-40 workers were present when the incident occurred around 10 am.


A police officer said 17 bodies have been recovered from the debris so far, while many others are still missing. Rescue and relief efforts are underway.


There are total 4 pillars in the bridge. A video of the incident shows that the girder between the third and fourth pillars has collapsed. All the laborers were working on this girder. The height of the bridge from the ground is 104 meters i.e. 341 feet.


PM expresses grief 


The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives due to bridge mishap in Mizoram.


The PM also announced an ex-gratia from PMNRF of Rs. 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for those injured.


The Prime Minister's Office posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Pained by the bridge mishap in Mizoram. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. Rescue operations are underway and all possible assistance is being given to those affected.


An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured: PM @narendramodi.


Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said he was deeply saddened over the loss of lives in the incident, and expressed gratitude to all those who helped in the rescue operation.
