New Delhi: Ten months after assuming the post of Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge has formed the new Congress Working Committee (CWC), in which many leaders who have shown rebellious attitude in the past have been given place.
Significantly Kharge has also given place to Shashi Tharoor, who contested against him for the post of Congress President, and youth leaders Sachin Pilot and Gaurav Gogoi. Besides, former Chief Ministers Ashok Chavan and Charanjit Singh Channi find place in the CWC.
The inclusion of Shashi Tharoor and Sachin Pilot in the CWC is considered significant.
By including Tharoor, Kharge has indicated that Tharoor contested against him but he (Kharge) sees it as part of democracy within the party.
In Rajasthan, Sachin Pilot, who has shown a rebellious attitude against his own government, has got a place, but Raghu Sharma, who is considered close to the Ashok Gehlot government, has been kept out.
By increasing the stature of Pilot, Kharge has tried to give two messages. Firstly, despite his important role in Rajasthan politics and not being given the post of chief minister, the party cares about Sachin Pilot.
Second, this will reduce the pressure on Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot before the assembly elections in Rajasthan to be held in November-December.
Sachin Pilot who is often at loggerheads with party colleagues and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed his gratitude towards the party's central leadership for inducting him as a member of the working committee.
He also promised to strengthen the ideology of the party and take it to the people more forcefully.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Pilot wrote, "I express my gratitude towards respected Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, CPP Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former president Rahul Gandhi for making me a member of the Congress Working Committee. We will strengthen the traditions, policy and ideology of the Congress and take it more forcefully to the people."
Leaders of rebel G-23 Group get place in CWC
In the CWC, the leaders of the rebel group G-23 of the Congress party have found a place.
There has been a major organizational change in the party under the chairmanship of Kharge. G-23 leaders like Anand Sharma to Mukul Wasnik have got a place in CWC.
Anand Sharma, who was not re-nominated to Rajya Sabha, has been included in the CWC. Manish Tiwari, another big leader of G-23, has also been given a place. Mukul Wasnik attended a meeting of the G-23, former Karnataka CM M Veerappa Moily, who has been on the sideline for a long time, has been included in the CWC. Tharoor is the big face of this group.
These appointments indicate that Kharge wants to forget the past and start afresh.
Pawan Kheda and Supriya Shrinate from the Communication Department of the Congress have been included in CWC.
The old faithful leaders of the party have also found a place. The CWC membership of AK Antony, who has returned to Kerala after announcing his retirement, has been retained. At the same time, Digvijaya Singh, P. Chidambaram, BK Hariprasad and Pratibha Singh, who are considered close to the Gandhi family, have also been given a place.
