Varanasi: Clearing the air on whether former Congress president Rahul Gandhi will contest the Lok Sabha poll from his traditional seat Amethi, Uttar Pradesh unit's newly appointed president Ajay Rai on Friday claimed that he will 'definitely' contest from Amethi.
On his arrival to Varanasi for the first time after being appointed as the state president, when asked whether Rahul will contest the Lok Sabha poll from Amethi seat, Rai said, "Rahul Gandhi will definitely contest the poll from Amethi. The people of Amethi are here."
Party workers will ensure Priyanka’s victory
He said, "As far as Priyanka Gandhi is concerned, the party workers will leave no stone unturned to ensure her victory from wherever she is willing to contest, even if it's Varanasi."
On the question that Union Minister Smriti Irani has claimed that Rahul will not come to Delhi, the state president said, "Smriti Irani herself is confused. She claimed to provide sugar at the rate of Rs 13 per kilogram. Has she been able to do so? She should give an answer to the people."
These will be main issues in LS poll
The UP State President said that the main issue of the party in the Lok Sabha poll would be inflation, unemployment and the atmosphere of fear being created by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"We will take the message of love given by Rahul Gandhi to each and every household in Uttar Pradesh," he said.
It may be noted that Rahul Gandhi, who was elected as an MP from Amethi Lok Sabha constituency for the three consecutive terms since 2004 general elections, was defeated by BJP candidate Smriti Irani by a margin of more than 55,000 votes in 2019 Lok Sabha election. Currently Rahul is MP from Wayanad in Kerala.
It may be mentioned that ahead of Lok Sabha pols due next year Congress had appointed former MLA Ajay Rai as the new chief of UP Pradeshik Congress Committee (UPPCC) replacing former MP Brijlal Khabari on Thursday.
Rai was acting as the president of Prayagraj zone in UP. Though no reason has been given for replacing Khabari, party sources said that his performance as the state unit president was not up to the mark.
Ajay, who hails from a Bhumihar family, is considered to be a strongman of Purvanchal region of UP.
A five-time MLA, Rai unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha election against Prime Minister Narendra Modi twice, first in 2014 and then again in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
