India Bag Hockey Gold In Asian Games After 9 Years, Secure Place For Paris 2024


 

Hangzhou: The Indian men's hockey team won the gold medal with a resounding 5-1 win over defending champion Japan in the 19th Asian Games-2023 on Friday and secured a place for Paris 2024.

This is India's fourth gold medal in men's field hockey in the Asian Games. India had previously won gold medals in 1966, 1998 and 2014. Indian team forward Sukhjeet Singh earned his 50th international cap in the match against Japan. 

 

Harmanpreet Singh (32', 59'), Manpreet Singh (25'), Amit Rohidas (36') and Abhishek (48') scored goals for India in the final. The only goal for Japan was scored by Seren Tanaka (51').

Hockey India announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for each player of the Indian men's hockey team, along with Rs 2.50 lakh for the support staff.

On India's big win, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, “India had to wait for nine long years to win the gold medal in the Asian Games. We are proud of each team member and the team. This is the beginning for the 2024 Paris Olympics and we are confident that our team will continue to grow even further in the coming year.

Hockey India General Secretary Bhola Nath Singh said, “India's gold medal win in Hangzhou is a testament to the months of hard work put in at the national coaching camps last year. Every member of the team and the coaching staff gave our all to help us win the gold medal at the Asian Games and ensure a berth for the 2024 Paris Olympics. ,
