ODI World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill Discharged from Hospital In Chennai But May Miss Match Against Pakistan

Shubman Gill, India's opening batsman, was hospitalized in Chennai due to a bout of dengue fever. Gill was admitted to Kauvery Hospital on Monday morning and was kept under the care of a team of doctors led by Dr. Rizwan Khan from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Gill has been subsequently released but he still remains a doubtful starter for the World Cup clash against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14.

It will be Gill’s health which will be paramount for the Indian team management as he requires to be 100 per cent fit for the marathon tournament.

Gill, who tested positive for dengue upon his arrival in Chennai last week has been down for the past week and will also miss India’s second game against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Gill's platelet count did not shown improvement, which prevented him from accompanying the team to Delhi. The medical advice provided to the team management suggested avoiding air travel when platelet counts are low. Consequently, the BCCI had previously announced that Gill would not participate in the upcoming match against Afghanistan in ODI World Cup 2023.

Gill may fly directly to Ahmedabad if he recovers

Furthermore, it appears unlikely that Gill will be fit to play in the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match scheduled for October 14th. Sources suggest that he could make his way directly to Ahmedabad.

It's worth noting that Gill missed India's initial match against Australia due to dengue, with Ishan Kishan stepping in as his replacement, albeit without scoring any runs.

The BCCI had previously disclosed that Shubman Gill had developed a high fever shortly after arriving in Chennai for the first match. Subsequent tests revealed his diagnosis of dengue.

Gill in great form this year

In terms of performance, Shubman Gill has been in exceptional form this year, emerging as India's top run-scorer in ODIs in 2023. He has amassed 1,230 runs in 20 ODI matches this year, maintaining an impressive average of 72.35 and a striking rate of 105.03. Of his six ODI centuries, five have been achieved in the current year.
