PM Modi speaks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, says India will continue to send humanitarian assistance for Palestinian people



New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation on Thursday with the President of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas.


Prime Minister conveyed deep condolences over the loss of civilian lives at the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza.


Highlighting traditionally close and historic ties between India and this region, Prime Minister expressed deep concern at terrorism, violence and deteriorating security situation in the region.


He reiterated India's long-standing and principled position on the Israel-Palestine issue.


President Mahmoud Abbas shared his assessment of the situation. He thanked Prime Minister for India's support and appreciated India's position.


Prime Minister conveyed that India will continue to send humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people.


The two leaders agreed to remain in touch.


On Tuesday, an explosion at the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza resulted in the reported deaths of approximately 500 individuals, leading to strong international condemnation.


The Palestinian authorities attributed the hospital explosion to Israeli airstrikes, while Israel claimed it was caused by a misfired rocket launched from Gaza by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group.


According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, Prime Minister Modi called President Abbas to discuss the latest developments in Palestine and the urgent need to cease Israeli aggression in Gaza.

President Abbas underscored the importance of ending acts of aggression and lifting the ongoing blockade in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized the necessity of providing humanitarian aid, medical supplies, food, and ensuring access to water and electricity for the Palestinian people in Gaza.


The report stated that President Abbas emphasized that the policies, programs, and decisions of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) are the legitimate and sole representation of the Palestinian people. He reiterated that security and peace can only be achieved through the implementation of the two-state solution based on international legitimacy.

In response, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India's unwavering support for a peaceful resolution based on international law and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people during these challenging times. He stressed the significance of returning to negotiations and dialogues to achieve lasting peace in the region.


On the previous day, Modi had expressed his shock at the loss of lives in the Gaza hospital attack and called for accountability for those responsible for civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict. He offered heartfelt condolences to the victims' families and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
