Weather: Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Tej May Intensify, Says IMD

A potent cyclone named 'Tej' is currently developing in the southwestern Arabian Sea, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that it is highly likely to escalate into an extremely severe cyclonic storm by Sunday forenoon.

According to the IMD, as of 2330 IST on October 21, 'Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Tej' was situated over the southwestern Arabian Sea, approximately 330 kilometers east-southeast of Socotra (Yemen), 690 kilometers south-southeast of Salalah (Oman), and 720 kilometers southeast of Al Ghaidah (Yemen). The IMD's forecast suggests that it will intensify further, becoming an extremely severe cyclonic storm by the forenoon of October 22.

Landfall in early hours of Oct 25

Furthermore, the IMD has stated that this cyclone is expected to make landfall between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman) in the early hours of October 25.

Another weather disturbance is taking shape

In addition to 'Tej,' another weather disturbance is taking shape over the west-central Bay of Bengal. As of 2330 IST on October 21, it had developed into a depression. This depression is currently located around 620 kilometers south of Paradip (Odisha), 780 kilometers south of Digha (West Bengal), and 900 kilometers south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh). The IMD anticipates that it will further intensify, likely becoming a deep depression within the next 24 hours.

The IMD's forecast suggests that this weather system will initially move northwestwards over the next 12 hours and subsequently shift direction, moving north-northeastwards over the following three days, eventually making its way towards the coasts of Bangladesh and adjacent West Bengal.
