Lok Sabha Elections-2024: End of an Era: Varun and Maneka Gandhi's Two-Decade Reign in Pilibhit Comes to a Close

The longstanding dominance of Varun and Maneka Gandhi in Pilibhit, spanning over two decades, sees a significant shift as Uttar Pradesh Minister Jitin Prasada, a former Congress member who joined the BJP two years ago, is named the BJP's candidate for the Pilibhit Lok Sabha constituency, replacing Varun Gandhi.

Pilibhit, a constituency represented either by Varun Gandhi or his mother Maneka Gandhi for more than twenty years, witnesses a change as Prasada steps into the fray. Meanwhile, the BJP renominates former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi for the Sultanpur constituency, maintaining its candidate list continuity.

Varun Gandhi's entry into politics in 2009 marked a decisive victory in Pilibhit, followed by consecutive wins in 2014 and 2019, reinforcing the family's political stronghold. However, his recent criticisms of his own party and government policies have worked against him.

In a related development, the BJP introduces Atul Garg as the candidate for Ghaziabad, replacing sitting MP and Union Minister V K Singh, who announced his decision not to contest just before the candidate list was unveiled.

This marks the second list of candidates from UP released by the BJP for the Lok Sabha elections, with the party yet to declare its candidate for the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat. Notable changes include Durvijay Singh Shakya's nomination in Budaun over current MP Sanghamitra Maurya, and Chattrapal Singh Gangwar's nomination in Bareilly, replacing sitting MP Santosh Gangwar.

Further candidate announcements include Raghav Lakhanpal for Saharanpur, Sarvesh Singh for Moradabad, and Satish Gautam for Aligarh seats.
