Lok Sabha Elections-2024: Why did Mamata Banerjee field Yusuf Pathan from Adhir Ranjan's stronghold in West Bengal?

Lok Sabha Elections-2024: Trinamool Congress has decided to field former cricketer Yusuf Pathan from Berhampur Lok Sabha seat of West Bengal.

Baharampur Lok Sabha seat falls in Murshidabad district. This is a Muslim dominated seat. About 52 percent of the population here is Muslims.

Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary has been winning the Lok Sabha elections from here since 1999.

Adhir Ranjan Choudhary and Mamata Banerjee share a strained relationship, with speculation suggesting that Adhir Ranjan is the reason for the lack of alliance between Congress and Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

Recently, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary made several inflammatory remarks against Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee, expressing concerns about the state's law and order situation.

Mamata is banking on Yusuf Pathan to counter Adhir Ranjan

Mamata is reportedly banking on Yusuf Pathan, a Gujarat resident, to counter Adhir Ranjan Choudhary and secure victory.

He has played for the Indian national team for a long time. He has played for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL. His brother Irfan Pathan is also a former player of the national cricket team.

Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary raised questions on this decision of Mamata Banerjee and also raised the issue of 'outsider'.

Adhir said, "If TMC wanted to honor Yusuf Pathan, it would have sent him as a member of the Rajya Sabha. If Mamata Banerjee had genuine regard for Yusuf Pathan, she would have demanded a seat from the alliance in Gujarat. However, his presence here seems driven by a calculated strategy to create polarization among the public, benefit the BJP, and disadvantage the Congress party."

Questioning Mamata Banerjee's intentions, he said, "She herself was known as a spokesperson of the India Alliance till a few days ago."

Adhir Ranjan has been winning Lok Sabha elections from Baharampur since 1999. He has won from here and reached Lok Sabha five times.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated the Trinamool Congress candidate by more than 80 thousand votes.

In 2014, he defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Indranil Sen by more than 1.5 lakh votes.
