Petitions seeking ban on CAA to be heard in Supreme Court today

After the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), about 230 petitions demanding a ban on it will be heard in the Supreme Court today i.e. on Tuesday.

In these petitions, it has been demanded that they should direct the Central Government to put a stay on the rules of CAA till the decision is taken in the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear this case.

Last week, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) lawyer and former Union Minister Kapil Sibal had requested this division bench of the Supreme Court to hear the matter as soon as possible.

Sibal said that once the migrant Hindus get citizenship, it would not be possible to take it away, hence this matter should be heard as soon as possible.

CAA was made in December 2019. Nearly 51 months later, its rules were notified on March 11.

After that, in the last one week many people have been given Indian citizenship.

This law has a provision to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who came to India from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh before December 31, 2014.
