Rajasthan: Sad News Comes Again From Coaching Hub Kota

Kota: Another coaching student has died of suicide by hanging himself in Kota, Rajasthan. Last year in 2023, 27 students preparing for various competitive examinations died by suicide in the district. In 2024, seven students have died so far.

According to the information received, the student died of suicide by hanging himself sometime late in the evening on Sunday in a private hostel in Landmark City under Kunhadi police station area of the city. This came to light when the family members of the deceased student, Sumit, resident of Rohtak, Haryana, called him on Sunday as it was a holiday, but he did not pick up the phone even after repeated calls.

The family members informed the hostel manager about this. When the manager went to check he saw student Sumit hanging from the ceiling fan of the room. The fan from which the student committed suicide was not fitted with an anti-hanging device.

After being informed, the police reached the spot and kept the body of the coaching student in the mortuary of MBS Hospital in Kota late at night and informed the family members. Only after their arrival in Kota, the body will be handed over after post-mortem.

Negligence of hostel operators

The negligence of the operators of the hostel built for the coaching students of Kota has once again come to light. The hostel where coaching student Sumit committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan did not have an anti-hanging device installed on it to prevent such incidents. Installation of the device has been made mandatory by the state and district administration as a precautionary measure.

Police have registered a case of suicide and started investigation but the reasons behind the suicide of the coaching student have not been revealed yet. Since no letter written before his death was recovered from the coaching student's hostel room, the exact reason behind the suicide has not been revealed.

Kota is the hub of India’s test-prep business, estimated to be worth ₹10,000 crore annually, according to officials in the district administration. Students from around the country go there in huge numbers after completing their Class X and register for residential test-prep institutes. They also enroll in schools, most of which are largely for certifications.

Students attend classes only in the test-prep institutes, which prepare them for their Class XII examination, but more importantly, entrance examinations such as NEET and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).

According to police data, 15 students died by suicide in Kota in 2022, 18 in 2019, 20 in 2018, seven in 2017, 17 in 2016, and 18 in 2015. No suicides were reported in 2020 and 2021 as coaching institutes were shut or functioned online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
