Jammu Kashmir Bus Accident: PM Modi, President Murmu express grief over death of 21 pilgrims in Akhnoor

On Thursday afternoon, a bus carrying pilgrims fell into a 150 feet deep gorge in Akhnoor, Jammu. 22 people died in the accident. 69 people are injured. The death toll may increase. The injured have been admitted to Akhnoor Hospital and Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu.


The accident took place on the Jammu-Poonch highway. A police officer said that about 90 people from Hathras in Uttar Pradesh as well as Rajasthan were travelling in the bus. All were going from Hathras to Shiv Khodi. Rescue operation is underway. The reason for the accident is not yet known.


There were about 91 passengers in the bus at the time of the accident. Police and local people launched a rescue operation after the accident and somehow pulled out the injured from the deep ditch and admitted them to the nearby Akhnoor sub-district hospital. From where some seriously injured passengers were referred to Jammu Government Medical College (GMC) after first aid.


PM Narendra Modi has announced to give Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased. At the same time, the injured will be given Rs 50 thousand.


PM Modi, President Murmu expressed grief


Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Draupadi Murmu have expressed grief over the incident. President Murmu wrote on X, "Saddened to learn about the death of people in a bus accident in Akhnoor near Jammu. My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. I wish the injured a speedy recovery."


Were going to Shivakhodi for darshan of Bholenath


According to preliminary information, some people from Hathras of UP were going to Shiv Khodi Dham for darshan from Kurukshetra in Haryana by boarding a bus. Shivkhodi Dham is in Pauni of Reasi district located in Jammu division. This place is located 80 km from Vaishno Devi temple. A large number of people reach here for darshan of Lord Bholenath.


Lost balance at blind turn


It is said that the bus number UP 86EC 4078 went out of control and fell into a deep ditch at Chungi turn in Akhnoor. Actually, a bus was coming from the front on a sharp turn here, the driver of the other bus lost balance due to the arrival of the bus leading to the accident. As soon as the bus driver lost balance over the bus, it became a victim of an accident. Local people informed the police. Immediately after this, relief and rescue operation was carried out.


The injured admitted in the hospital said that a bus was coming from the opposite direction. The bus driver tried to cross the turn but could not succeed and as a result the vehicle fell into a deep ditch.


A similar accident had happened 6 months ago too. On 15 November 2023, a bus fell into a 300 feet deep gorge in Assar area of ​​​​Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir. 38 people, including 9 women, died in the accident. The bus was going from Kishtwar to Jammu.
