Lok Sabha elections-2024: BJP Opts for Change in Kaiserganj Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Who Takes His Place?

In a significant move, the BJP has decided not to field its long-standing MP and former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections-2024. Instead, his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, has been nominated as the party's candidate from Kaiserganj in Uttar Pradesh. This announcement, made today, quells the speculations surrounding the Kaiserganj seat and its incumbent MP.

Pratap Singh from Rae Bareli

Alongside the introduction of Karan Bhushan Singh, the BJP has also named Pratap Singh as its candidate from the Congress stronghold of Rae Bareli. The Congress is yet to unveil its contender for this prestigious seat, formerly held by Sonia Gandhi.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a six-term MP, faced a significant setback following allegations of sexual harassment, which prompted prominent wrestlers to stage protests. This development compelled the BJP to seek an alternative candidate, prioritizing the preservation of its electoral prospects in the crucial state.

Party acknowledges Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's political influence

Despite the allegations, the party acknowledges Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh's political influence in the region, hence his son's selection as his successor.

Sources within the BJP had previously indicated that discussions were held with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on the matter, but he remained adamant about contesting the elections.

His elder son, Pratik Bhushan Singh, currently serves as an MLA, while Karan Bhushan Singh is at the helm of the Uttar Pradesh wrestling body.

The Kaiserganj constituency is scheduled to vote on May 20 during the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections, with the nomination deadline set for tomorrow.

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who served as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India for over a decade, garnered attention last year when top wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, and Sakshi Malik, accused him of sexual harassment, sparking widespread protests in the national capital.

Despite vehement denials of the allegations, the legal proceedings against him are ongoing in a Delhi court.

Last month, the BJP leader attributed the delay in announcing the party's candidate for Kaiserganj to the media, stating, "You (media) people need not worry. The announcement of my candidature is getting delayed because of you people."
