UP Lok Sabha Election 2024: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will contest elections from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh. Congress party has made Kishori Lal Sharma its candidate from Amethi.
This is the first time that Rahul Gandhi will contest elections from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat.
Rahul Gandhi has been MP from Amethi thrice. In 2019, Rahul Gandhi had to face defeat in Amethi.
Rahul Gandhi reached the Lok Sabha from Wayanad seat in Kerala in 2019. This time too Rahul Gandhi is contesting elections from Wayanad.
This is the first time since 1999 that no member of the Gandhi family is contesting elections from Amethi.
KL Sharma has been Sonia Gandhi's parliamentary representative in Rae Bareli.
Before releasing the Congress list, it was believed that Priyanka Gandhi could contest elections from Amethi or Rae Bareli. But Priyanka's name is not in the Congress list.
BJP has made Dinesh Pratap Singh its candidate from Rae Bareli. Union Minister Smriti Irani is contesting elections from Amethi.
Priyanka's decision could add to the party's discomfiture
Priyanka's decision not to contest could add to the party's discomfiture. Many leaders of the Congress suspect that it could create a negative perception that may reflect on the outcome of the election across the country. Polling on 353 seats is still left, of which the Congress is contesting on 330 seats.
Sources said Priyanka's reluctance stemmed from the fact that her victory from Raebareli could reinforce the BJP allegations of dynasty politics, since all three of them would be in parliament. Sonia Gandhi is already in Rajya Sabha and Rahul Gandhi has contested from Kerala's Wayanad.
Today is the last date for filing nominations in Amethi and Rae Bareli. Voting on both these seats will be held in the fifth phase on May 20.
