If you hold a State Bank of India (SBI) account, be vigilant as cybercriminals are targeting SBI customers with fraudulent messages. The cybercrime wing of the Tamil Nadu Police has reported 73 such cases in the past two months.
Following these complaints, the police issued an advisory on the "SBI Reward Points Scam." This scam involves fraudsters sending messages that falsely claim customers' reward points are expiring. The message includes a link, urging recipients to click and download an APK file. This file, once installed, grants scammers access to personal and financial information on the victim's smartphone.
Understanding SBI Reward Points
SBI offers a reward points program where customers earn points for transactions made with their debit or credit cards. These points can be redeemed for recharges, travel, or shopping. However, the points expire after 24 months if not used.
How the Scam Works
In the SBI Reward Points Scam, scammers exploit the reward points system to hack smartphones. They send fake messages under the guise of the State Bank of India, complete with the bank's logo and name, to make them appear legitimate.
Recently, these fraudulent messages have been circulated via WhatsApp, both in official and personal groups. Scammers can even alter the group icon and name to mimic the State Bank of India. The messages contain a link purportedly to update bank details or redeem SBI Reward Points.
The Danger of APK Files
When victims click the provided link, they are prompted to download an APK file (Android Package). This file contains malware that, once installed, compromises the device. The malware can steal banking credentials, including customer names, passwords, smartcard information, tokens, biometrics, and other sensitive data.
Protecting Yourself from the SBI Reward Points Scam
SBI has previously issued warnings about such scams, advising customers to be cautious of reward point-related messages. Here are some key steps to protect yourself:
Avoid Clicking Suspicious Links: Do not click on links in unsolicited messages. Verify the information through official sources, websites, or apps. Genuine links from SBI will not ask you to download third-party APK files.
Beware of APK Files: APK files can contain malware that compromises your device and can lead to the theft of your personal and financial information.
Immediate Action if Suspicious Activity is Detected
If you suspect any fraudulent activity, turn off your device's data immediately. This can halt any ongoing malicious processes.
Report the incident promptly to the cybercrime toll-free helpline number 1930 or visit www.cybercrime.gov.in to file a complaint.
Stay alert and protect your personal and financial information from cybercriminals.
