Shooter Gagan Narang, who has represented the country four times in the Olympics, will be the Chef de Mission of the Indian team at the Paris Olympics. The Olympic Games will begin on July 26.
Gagan Narang won the bronze medal in the men's 10 meter air rifle competition at the 2012 Olympics. Badminton player PV Sindhu, who has won two medals at the Olympics, will be India's female flag bearer. Table tennis player Sharad Kamal will be the male flag bearer.
Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha said that Gagan Narang was earlier India's Deputy Chef de Mission. But due to Mary Kom's resignation, he was given the responsibility of Chef de Mission.
Mary Kom was originally announced as India's chef-de-mission at the Paris Olympics 2024 by the IOA in March, while Narang was tasked with leading the Indian shooting team.
IOA President Dr PT Usha said, “I was looking for an Olympic medallist to lead our team and Narang is a perfect replacement for my young colleague Mary Kom.”
PV Sindhu, Sharath Kamal will be flag bearers
PT Usha said, "I am also happy to announce that PV Sindhu, India's only woman to win two Olympic medals, will be the female flag bearer at the opening ceremony along with table tennis player Sharath Kamal."
The Paris 2024 Olympics will be the second consecutive Games where India will have two flag bearers. At Tokyo 2020, Mary Kom and Manpreet Singh were India's flag bearers.
The flag bearer at the Olympic Games is a symbolic leader who is the first person to march with a country's delegation during the grand opening ceremony parade. The person walks ahead with his or her contingent proudly displaying the country's flag during the parade.
The Paris 2024 Olympics will begin on July 26 and end on August 11.
What is Chef de Mission
The Chef de Mission or Head of Mission represents the national team at the Olympics, Commonwealth and Asian Games and is its head.
The Chef de Mission plays many roles simultaneously. Apart from leading the national team, he also acts as a mentor, supporter and cheerleader to motivate the players to perform well. He also plays the role of the spokesperson of the team.
