In Chhattisgarh, heavy rains in the Bastar division caused the NMDC check dam in Kirandul, Dantewada district, to break. The resulting floodwaters inundated the city, leading to the collapse of over 100 houses and shops. The force of the water was so intense that it swept away vehicles of all sizes and uprooted roads and streets.
Level of many rivers, water bodies rising in MP
Madhya Pradesh has also been severely affected by the rain, with rising water levels in many rivers, dams, and ponds. Significant dams such as Indira Sagar, Tighra, Tawa, and Bargi have seen water levels increase by 3 to 6 feet within 24 hours. The gates of the Satpura dam in Betul, Thawar in Nainpur, Mandla, and Sheopur dam had to be opened to manage the rising waters. A heavy rain alert has been issued for nine states, including Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
In Uttar Pradesh, areas adjacent to Nepal are experiencing severe flooding due to heavy rains. Ten districts, including Lakhimpur, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Gonda, and Bahraich, are particularly affected. The Rapti river is overflowing in Gorakhpur, flooding villages along its banks and impacting around 40,000 people.
