Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh High Court issued a notice to Kangana Ranaut, the BJP Lok Sabha member from Mandi, on Wednesday. This follows a petition from Layak Ram Negi, a resident of Kinnaur, who is seeking to have her election results annulled.
Negi claims that his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha constituency were improperly rejected. Justice Jyotsna Rewal has instructed Kangana Ranaut to submit a response by August 21.
In the recent election, Kangana Ranaut secured the Mandi Lok Sabha seat by defeating Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh by a margin of 74,755 votes. She garnered 537,002 votes, while Singh received 462,267 votes.
Negi, a former employee of the forest department, asserted that his nomination papers were unfairly rejected by the returning officer, who is the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi. He contended that after taking premature retirement, he submitted a "no dues certificate" from the forest department along with his nomination papers.
However, he was subsequently asked to provide additional "no dues certificates" from the electricity, water, and telephone departments. When Negi provided these documents, the returning officer reportedly declined to accept them, resulting in the rejection of his nomination papers.
Negi asserted that had his nomination been accepted, he might have won the election, and thus, he requested that Kangana Ranaut's election be invalidated.
