Late Captain Anshuman Singh's mother appeals to PM Modi regarding Agniveer Yojana

The mother of Captain Anshuman Singh, who lost his life saving his comrades in Siachen in July last year, has demanded the Narendra Modi government to 'immediately cancel' the Agniveer scheme.

On 19 July 2023, a fire broke out at the army base in Siachen. Captain Anshuman was a medical officer in the Army Medical Corps. Many soldiers were trapped in the bunker. Anshuman Singh entered the bunker to save the soldiers, where he got badly burnt. He died during treatment in Chandigarh.

President Droupadi Murmu on July 5 2024 awarded the Kirti Chakra, the country's second highest gallantry award in peace time, to Captain Anshuman Singh's mother Manju Singh and wife Smriti Singh.

Manju and her husband Ravi Pratap Singh met Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi in Rae Bareli on Tuesday.

Manju told reporters, "We talked to Rahul about the Agniveer scheme. We seriously believe that this scheme should be stopped immediately. I have also demanded the government to cancel this scheme and provide all facilities to those who joined the army as Agniveers."

She said, "I have also met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. He has shown a positive attitude towards our point of view."

She said, "With folded hands, I appeal to the government to stop the Agniveer scheme. It is only for four years and this is not right. Pension, canteen and other facilities available to a soldier should be given."

This issue was raised in the Lok Sabha in the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha and Rahul Gandhi had demanded the cancellation of this scheme.
