Social Misconceptions Prevent People from Seeking Help
According to Mindcafe, mental health is a critical issue in today's world, with significant relevance both in India and globally. There is a rapid increase in mental health problems worldwide, necessitating serious attention. In Indian society, there are numerous misconceptions and stigmas surrounding mental health, often viewed as a sign of weakness or insanity, which discourages people from seeking help.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 7.5% of India's population suffers from some form of mental illness, with depression and anxiety being the most prevalent. The National Mental Health Survey (2015-16) found that one in six individuals in India experiences mental health issues in their lifetime.
Alarmingly, India also witnesses around 200,000 suicides annually, constituting 17.5% of the global total. Globally, WHO reports that approximately 264 million people suffer from depression, and there are about 800,000 suicides every year, highlighting a significant global concern. In the United States, about 20% of the population deals with mental illness, while in Europe, this figure rises to 25%.
Inclusive Participation and Awareness Essential for a Healthy and Happy Society
According to Mindcafe, raising awareness about mental health is crucial in society. Enhancing access to and quality of mental health services is essential. Efforts should focus on identifying and addressing mental health issues at the community level. Additionally, there is a need for improved education and training for mental health professionals. Mental health is a critical issue that demands serious attention both in India and globally. It requires concerted efforts from every segment of society to foster a healthy and joyful community.
