Amid heavy rains in Nepal, two buses were swept away in the Trishuli river due to a landslide on a highway on Friday morning. According to officials present at the scene, a total of 63 people, including drivers, were travelling in both the buses.
About 60 people are missing after the accident. According to Nepali media house Kathmandu Post, the death of a bus driver has been confirmed. While 2 people saved their lives by jumping from the bus.
The accident took place at around 3.30 am on the Madan-Ashrit Highway in Central Nepal. Search and rescue operations are facing difficulties due to continuous rain and strong flow of water.
The landslide affected the Angel bus, which was heading to Kathmandu with 24 passengers, and the Ganpati Deluxe, which was traveling from Kathmandu to Gaur in Rautahat with 41 people on board. Three passengers from the Ganpati Deluxe managed to escape by jumping out of the vehicle.
Chitwan Chief District Officer Indradev Yadav told that a bus that fell into the river due to the landslide was going to Kathmandu and had 24 people on board while 41 people were travelling in the other bus.
Nepal PM expressed grief over the accident
Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed grief over the accident. He wrote on social media, 'I am deeply saddened by the reports of about five dozen passengers missing after two buses was swept away by a landslide at Narayangardh-Muglin Road station. I direct all government agencies to search for the passengers and rescue them safely.'
Flights cancelled
Due to rain and bad weather in Nepal, all flights from Kathmandu to Bharatpur have been canceled till further notice. At the same time, 62 people have died in the last 7 days. While more than 90 people have been injured.
Of these, 34 people died in landslides while 28 people were swept away in flood waters. According to officials, due to heavy rains in Nepal, there are flood-like conditions in many areas. 121 houses were swept away in the flood and 82 were badly destroyed.
