An oil tanker carrying 16 crew members, including 13 Indians and three Sri Lankans, has gone missing after capsizing off the coast of Oman on Monday. The incident was reported by the Sultanate's Maritime Security Centre (MSC).
The Comoros-flagged vessel, named Prestige Falcon, capsized 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah, near the port town of Duqm. The port is situated on Oman's southwest coast, close to significant oil and gas projects, including a major oil refinery within Duqm's vast industrial zone, the largest single economic project in the Sultanate.
The MSC announced the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the crew of the Prestige Falcon is still missing. A search operation is ongoing to locate the missing crew members.
The MSC said the vessel remains "submerged, inverted". It did not confirm whether the vessel had stabilised or whether oil or oil products were leaking into the sea.
According to shipping data from marinetraffic.com, the oil tanker was en route to the Yemeni port city of Aden. The vessel, built in 2007, is 117 meters long and designed to transport oil products.
Omani authorities conducted a search-and-rescue operation at the scene in coordination with maritime authorities, Oman's state news agency reported late on Monday.
