PM Narendra Modi Arrives to a Grand Welcome in Russia: What will be the Focus of the Talks?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Moscow, marking his first visit to Russia in five years. Upon his arrival, he received a grand welcome at the airport, complete with a guard of honor. This significant visit follows his last trip to Russia in 2019, before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent war between Russia and Ukraine.

India's Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, highlighted the key focus areas of Prime Minister Modi's visit, which include enhancing bilateral trade, economic relations, and exploring new avenues in scientific and technological research. Kumar expressed optimism that these discussions would yield "concrete results" across various sectors. Modi's visit, scheduled from July 8 to 9, comes at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin for the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit.

The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi announced this high-level visit. MEA spokesperson said that both leaders will conduct a comprehensive review of the multifaceted relations between India and Russia. They will also exchange views on contemporary regional and global issues of mutual interest.

According to Ambassador Kumar, the primary focus of the talks will be on trade, economic, and investment cooperation, as well as connectivity. This summit is part of the annual meetings between the two countries, ensuring that all aspects of their bilateral relations are addressed.

This visit marks Modi's return to Russia after nearly five years. His last visit in 2019 was for an economic conference in Vladivostok, a city in the Far East of Russia. The annual summit between the Indian Prime Minister and the Russian President represents the highest level of institutional dialogue in their strategic partnership. To date, 21 annual summits have alternated between India and Russia. The most recent summit took place in New Delhi on December 6, 2021, with President Putin attending.

Prime Minister Modi's current visit underscores the importance both nations place on maintaining and strengthening their bilateral relationship, particularly in the face of global challenges and shifting geopolitical dynamics.
